The Kearney High School Boys Tennis team are Conference champions after defeating Winnetonka High School at home on Thursday, May 4.
The night began with Varsity singles. Leyton Ross (8-2), Kadin Mansfield (8-2), and Nic Seuferer (8-4) all won their singles. Preston Murphy fought through a tough singles match ending at 2-8. Colin Thomson had a close singles match almost forcing a tiebreak, but didn’t quite get there, ending at 7-9. Colton Pazdera had an incredibly competitive singles match. He traded games back and forth with his opponent until they reached a tiebreak, which ended in Winnetonka’s favor 8-9 (5-7).
Going into Varsity doubles, tensions were high. Both teams clearly came to compete and wanted that conference champion title. Preston Murphy and Kadin Mansfield started off strong earning a win for Kearney (8-2). Nic Seuferer and Colin Thomson fought hard to make a comeback but ran into some tough competition (6-8).
At this point in the competition, the score was tied 4-4. It all came down to our top Varsity doubles match. Colton Pazdera and Leyton Ross did not let the pressure get to them and took the win at 8-2, making Kearney the 2023 Conference Champions.
JV had a solid win, 8-1. Aiden Hansen (7-5), Drew Heimsoth (6-1), Noah Plummer (6-1), Keenan Haney (6-1), Croy Anderson, (6-0), and Brody Mallet (6-0) all won their singles matches. Caden Powell/ Cameron Daniels (6-1) and Talan Shaw/Cooper Morgan (6-4) won their JV doubles.
